Second map release: ep2_testcave2

Games, Projects

Second version of my map is now released! Its whole new cave to discover.

While creating this map. I learned lots of things. Example, in this map I started to use Source engines Entity Input Output system to create scripted doors and traps. I also learned howto create doors.

As this is my second map, it may not be as great as it could be. But I would really like to get some feedback from this level. If you can/want, I would like if you would record demo from playing this level trough, and then sending it to me so I can see how the level works.

There is some things I could improve. There isn’t lots of props and some of the materials can look awkward. I also don’t have any assault/nodegraph system build, so most of enemies just wait that you come and kill them.

In case somebody wants to see what I have done, but can’t/doesn’t want to download the map, here is a video from the map. Please note that it is major spoiler.

Download links are at my project page. Please let me know what you think about this map.

First map released: ep2_testcave

Games, Projects

Today I have released my first map to Episode 2. It is also my first custom map to 3d games. (I have done couple maps to LieroX, etc)

As this is my first map, it is not perfect. But in my opinion, for first map it isn’t bad. I have couple of things that I would have done better. Example the orange dev material at start. But I have succeed in couple of things in my opinion well. Enemies are balanced, and there isn’t too never too much of them. And there is still challenge. I also really like how the lights works. Example the cave entrance at first room looks nice.

Most of the people won’t download the map anyway, so I uploaded a video so they can watch it. Please note that the video is one huge spoiler for this level. Watch it only if you don’t want to play the level.

Video with sound at wegame.

If somebody has any comments, please post them so I can make better maps.

Download the map/source files from my project page.

Update (8.3.2010): Added health packages to level and fixed the “wrong name” issue that caused random crashes. Redownload the file.

Modern Warfare 2 PC Review

Games, Review

Single player

Single player game was short. It took about 5 hours for me to finish the story at normal difficult. The campaign is better than mw1, but not as good as good single player fps games like hl2/portal. The story isn’t awesome, but some scenes and the loading videos are just awesome.

Some of the missions are great fun. Especially the sneaking tasks. But the massive battles are annoying! You just shoot everything and there comes even more enemies! Some times there is battles where you most likely are dying all the time and you must blindly shoot everybody… Then there comes more brainless enemies and so on.

Single player was fun, but some tasks were almost annoying.

Multiplayer

No dedicated servers. Good or bad thing? Partly both.

Bad things about no-dedis:

  • Some games are laggy (Some dedis are also laggy)
  • Host migration (Doesn’t happen often)
  • Mods/custom maps (Meh, isn’t big deal)
  • 9v9 player limit (Yes, if you are noob and want to nade spam everybody, this is not game for you. You need more skill playing this game.)(And IMO this is the right size for good match. The maps are well designed. Levels almost never feels too big)
  • No longer favorite servers where people likes to play

Good thing about current system:

  • You can get to game with just one click
  • Playing with friends is easier (I love the party system! It makes everything just so simple)
  • Matchmaking (ya, I am not sure if it works, but good thing to have)
  • No idiot admins with retarded rules (No c4/claymores/<insert your favorite wpn here> allowed)

I would like to see something like l4d has. Dedicated servers with matchmaking, but current system is ok. Only 10% of games are unplayable, but you get same kind of shit in dedicated servers also…

After 10 hours of multiplayer. I have got 4 host migrations, 2 failed to connect/failed to migrate messages, so mostly the system is working well.

Then, to the actual multiplayer game. There is lots of weapons and they are all usable. Most of the annoying perks are removed/changed to death streak. Example last stand and juggernaut are now death streaks with some modifications.

Care packages are awesome way to give some big guns (Helicopters/harriers/etc) for everybody, not just hardcore players. With death streaks and other small improvements the game will be much easier for noobs and still balanced.

Multiplayer is fun. LOTS OF FUN. I can say that this game is totally worth of the 38e I used to this game. The normal steam prize (60e) is way too high.

I recommend to buy this game if you like FPS shooters. (And there isn’t too much lag issues :)

Modern Warfare 2

Edit: Sometimes IWNet may have a problems and getting to game may take couple minutes, I hope that they will fix this soon…

Cube ported for ipod touch

Games, iPod touch/iPhone apps

Cube/sauerbraten is nice open source first person shooter game. It has nice graphics and lots of bloom. :)

The engine has been ported for iPod touch/iPhone and it runs very nicely. Full 3d world with all features that is on normal cube. Fps is around 20, it may not sound good but for handheld device it looks nice.

Biggest problem with cube is the controls. I would love to play this game, but with these controls it isn’t fun. However it is possible to get usable controls on iPod for 3d fps games. Example Wolfenstein port for ipod has awesome and customizable controls.

I like to use accelerometer to turn and touch pad to move. (cube uses accelerometer to move and touching to move)

This is great port of cube. And I am looking forward to use the next release. Developer says that controls are easier on next version. :)

But as it is free I recommend you to try it out and see if you can move around with those controls. :) I would also like to see multiplayer gaming. (I think it works, but I would like to see couple centrelized servers and maybe some stats :P )

Yea... I wan't turn ability to Wordpress.

ET:QW stats tracker back online!

Games, Internet, Projects

I just found my old et:qw stats tracking script from my horrible backups.

At official et:qw stats page there is lots of good/fun information, but not any charts about progress! But because they offer a xml api, I created my own tracker for creating charts from stats.

This is about one year old, but I removed this last time from public use because my hosting was so slower to handle updater script. But now I have moved to better hosting, so I can host it again.

The script is build from a piece of PHP that fetch data from official tracker and puts it to MySQL database, and from another piece of PHP that shows data to user in cool flash chart. (Powered by Open flash chart) At backend there is running a daily cron script that runs the PHP fetch script.

This script also offers API to further developers. Via API other developer can get all data in xml format.

So, if you play et:qw, try my tracker! If you want see example statistics, look at my stats.
