Firefox 3.5 performance

Applications, Mac, Web developing

Performance of firefox with older releases haven’t been awesome. Couple of addons can easily take over 100megs of ram and browser become easily very unstable and slow. I did update on my macbook (PowerPC G4, 1.6 GHz single core CPU, 1.5G DDR2 ram MaxOS 10.4.11)

New firefox has also new logo

New firefox has also new logo

Before update with 3.0 I had 7 addons installed. With 2-3 tabs open firefox used 250megs of ram and cpu was 30-40. When my firefox was on heavy usage, it taked over 1500megs of ram and 100% of cpu… After update to 3.5 memory usage dropped to 90-100megs. Cpu dropped to 10-15%.

Then I installed 26 addons and opened 47 tabs (2 youtube videos and one <video>-tag, lots of heavy js/css sites.) Memory usage was just 226megs and cpu usage was at 50%. Firefox was little slow, but usable! It didn’t even try to freeze. After the test I closed all tabs expect one and memory usage dropped to 148megs and cpu usage is back at 10-15%!

Quick list:

  • Using many (over 15) addons won’t kill firefox instantly
  • Opening many tabs(over 20) won’t freeze kill firefox anymore
  • Memory usage have dropped 300%-500%
  • CPU usage is almost always under 50% on normal usage its under 20%
  • Acid3 test gives 92/100 points (ie8 gets about 20)
  • Firefox is my primary browser again

Biggest problem for me with firefox was the CPU/MEM usage while using lots of addons and now its fixed. I can install every cool addon I want and still use firefox without killing it! Now I just want that they fix the nvidia/linux canvas tag bug…

Istat remote monitoring app

Applications, Linux, Mac, iPod touch/iPhone apps

Istat is a iPod touch/iPhone app developed by bjango. With istat you can remotely monitor ram/mem/disk usage of your home computers or remote servers.

Istat server is available for mac and Linux. Linux version must be compiled manually, but it isn’t very difficult task if you have compiled stuff before. One difference on Linux version is that you can’t track temperatures. There is no support for windows.

You can track:

  • Mem usage
  • CPU usage
  • Disk usage
  • Net usage
  • Uptime
  • Load
  • Temperatures

You can also view information from your iPod/iPhone. One cool feature is “free memory”. With free memory command you can clear iPods/iPhones memory and make it run faster. (?) You also find id number and mac address.

There is also good traceroute and ping tools. Only thing I would like to have is pinging range of ip:s.

This app is now on sale 1.5e and it is worth of that 1.5e

World war ipod touch/iphone game

Applications, Mac, iPod touch/iPhone apps

I really don’t know why I play world war. This game has so many clones (same game, different graphics) on app store that I just hate it. It’s multiplayer game yes, but communication with other players is broken. Talking to other ppl is hard and pointless, there is no reason to talk to anybody. Why this is then a mmorpg game? Everybody just spams their invite code. It’s the only reason why there is communication on this game.

So what’s the game about? Yeah, just press button, you attack, maybe won. Then go buy stuff, spam your invite code to get more ppl to your alliance.. And then do it again! Again and again… Until you want to whack your head trough wall.

Yea. Dead simply game where you repeat yourself n+1 times. And I can’t stop playing it! I hate myself now…

DO NOT TRY TO SCAM PEOPLE WITH SAYING THAT YOU GET MONEY, RESOURCE OR ANYTHING WHEN ADDING. JUST POST THE CODE, DONT TRY TO SCAM. EVERY SCAM MESSAGE WILL BE DELETED. ALSO SPAMMING SAME CODE MULTITIPLE TIMES IS NOT ALLOWED.

Twitterrific ipod touch/iphone update

Applications, Internet, Mac, iPod touch/iPhone apps

Some time ago Iconfactory published new version of twitterrific for iPod touch/iPhone. The change log didn’t even show every change when I update this with app store, so I didn’t even notice that there was totally recreated version out. Now twitterrific is my first choice for mobile twitter client!

So… What’s new?

  • The application looks different and there is more blue birds. :P you can switch from 3 different tweet viewals tos another with one button. One “normal” view, one with extra large icons and one without icons.
  • Now there is support for multitiple accounts and this app will also include search and trends at statup page.
  • Action menu! After tapping a tweet you can open action menu. From action menu you can open someones profile view (where you can follow them and see their profile, followers/following count and so on.) You can also retweet from action menu.
  • Best thing is that posting new tweets is even better. It looks nice, but it is also easier to change from dm/reply/normal to another.
  • Show threads. Nice feature that makes your life easier of you have conversation with someone.
  • The build in browser have also got some new features. Best that I really like, is ability to save bookmark to delicious.
  • Twitterrific is awesome mobile app. I hope that they will update the desktop version soon.

Hello world from ipod touch!

Applications, Mac

Hello world! I am using iPod touch with wordpress application to post this blog post.

Actually this app looks pretty useful, you can write new posts and also manage comments. It is possible to edit and save posts locally, so you can write story anywhere and publish it when you found WLAN spot.

I hingly recommend this for everyone who has a blog and iPod touch/iphone.

I included couple of screenshots to this blog post.
